LINDON, UTAH PLASTIC SURGEON DISCUSSES IMPORTANCE OF GYNECOMASTIA

Parents usually aren’t sure how to address the overdevelopment of the breast in their sons. And it pains them to see their child not being able to enjoy time at the pool.

“One can imagine how distressing it would be to a young male who develops breasts at a time when the secondary sexual characteristics are developing,” says Dr. Kimball Crofts, a plastic surgeon in Lindon, Utah.

Some males experience abnormal enlargement of the breast due to excess fat in the area. Typically, this issue shouldn’t be worrisome. Nearly 40 percent of young males experience gynecomastia during puberty.

But if there’s no change after awhile, psychological issues can result.

“The important concept is that gynecomastia is a very real problem and is especially difficult for young males who develop this condition at the time of adolescence,” says the Utah cosmetic surgeon.

Those affected with gynecomastia may also experience a rubbery or firm feel to their breasts. Breast buds of about the size of a nickel or quarter could even be apparent.

“If no resolution has taken place at two years, then surgical treatment should be undertaken,” says Dr. Crofts.

At Aesthetica, we encourage parents to take care of their son’s gynecomastia at the earliest stage possible. By making cosmetic care a priority, you can reduce not only physical issues, but psychological challenges.

“It is a condition that needs to be treated with great sensitivity,” emphasizes Dr. Crofts. “Oftentimes, it gives these boys great relief.”
