Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, and it can deliver transformative results. However, many patients wonder about the long-term care of their implants: How often should breast implants be replaced? Do they need regular monitoring? At Aesthetica Plastic Surgery with Dr. Crofts, we’re here to provide clarity and guidance for your breast health and aesthetic goals.

The Lifespan of Breast Implants:

While breast implants are durable medical devices, they are not designed to last a lifetime. Most modern implants are highly advanced and can last for 10 to 15 years or longer without complications. However, they may require replacement due to factors like:

Implant Rupture: Although rare, both saline and silicone implants can rupture. Saline implants deflate visibly, while silicone ruptures (known as “silent ruptures”) often require imaging to detect.

Capsular Contracture: The formation of scar tissue around the implant can cause firmness, discomfort, or aesthetic concerns.

Changes in Appearance: Over time, natural aging, weight fluctuations, or lifestyle changes may alter the appearance of your breasts, leading to a desire for revision surgery.

Regular Monitoring is the key to Long-Term Success!

Regular check-ups with a primary care doctor are essential to monitor the condition of your implants. Here’s what we recommend:

Annual Breast Exams: Your primary care provider can evaluate the health of your breasts and implants. Your plastic surgeon can assist you when surgical intervention is needed.

Imaging Tests: For silicone implants, the FDA recommends MRI scans three years after surgery and every two years thereafter to check for silent ruptures. Newer technologies, such as high-resolution ultrasound, may also be an option.

When Should You Consider Replacement?

Although replacement isn’t mandatory at a specific interval, here are some scenarios where it might be necessary or desirable:

Complications: If you experience discomfort, hardness, or changes in the shape of your breasts, it’s time to consult Dr. Crofts.

Cosmetic Preferences: Over time, you may wish to change the size, shape, or type of your implants to better align with your aesthetic goals.

Aging Concerns: Gravity and aging affect all breasts, with or without implants. A breast lift or implant revision can rejuvenate your look.
