Experience, Referrals Critical in Choosing Plastic Surgeon
A recent issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, delved into what patients really look for when choosing their surgeon. As it turned out, experience and personal recommendation are the most influential factors. Of the two, surgeon experience represents the most important.
“They really go hand in hand,” says Utah plastic surgeon Dr. Kimball Crofts. “The best surgeons are usually the most experienced. And as they perform on more and more patients, they’re going to establish a reputation as being one of the best.”
The study consisted of 150 Dutch patients who expressed interest in some sort of plastic surgery procedure. Using conjoint analysis, a technique used to figure out the most valuable aspects of a product for consumers, patients were shown 18 different scenarios. They were assigned to rank their preferences based on travel time, cost, clinic size, surgeon experience, referral method and website presentation.
Nearly 36 percent selected surgeon experience as the top preference. More specifically, participants gave the nod to doctors with more than 10 years of experience as opposed to those with less experience.
“There’s no doubt that there are plenty of incredible plastic surgeons who aren’t very experienced quite yet,” explains Dr. Crofts. “But the longer that you’re in practice, the more precise you are with certain techniques and procedures. That leaves you the freedom to focus on treatment plans that are unique to each patient.”
Referrals came in as the second highest attribute at approximately 22 percent. Those in charge of the study said that patients prefer their referral to come from their general practitioner, ahead of recommendations from family, friends and coworkers. Interestingly, referrals via TV, radio, magazine and Internet forums had an adverse effect on the participants, discouraging them from choosing that particular surgeon.
“People are going to trust their family, friends and primary doctor,” says Dr. Crofts. “Surgeons can have great reviews online and elsewhere, too. But patients definitely receive word-of-mouth recommendations the best.”
Utah residents don’t have to look far in order to find a trusted plastic surgeon. Dr. Crofts was named to the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1998 and diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1990. He also plays an active role in many elite societies, including the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, International Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons and Rocky Mountain Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
