Liposuction Recovery Tips

According to ASPS trend report, liposuction is the #1 most sought after plastic surgery procedure for patients in 2021-2022. Since no skin is removed during liposuction, oftentimes patients may believe it to be a minimally invasive procedure when compared to other cosmetic procedures. However, liposuction can be more involved, regardless of the area and the size of the area being treated. For this reason, we put together a list of liposuction recovery tips to help you prepare for your liposuction journey.

1. EAT A HEALTHY DIET

It’s important to eat a nutritious and anti-inflammatory diet a few weeks prior and post surgery. Foods such as whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, and a berry-heavy diet to boost healing and reduce inflammation. Dr. Crofts also recommends his patients to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water and reduce salt intake to reduce swelling after surgery.

2. GET LOTS OF REST AND SLEEP

It’s important for recovery to get lots of rest and sleep. However, Dr. Crofts recommends incorporating frequent light walking to get your blood flowing, help minimize risks of blood clots, and to help with the overall recovery process. Any excessive physical activity, like the gym and weight lifting, should be avoided for the first 4 to 6 weeks. It’s important to listen to your body and allow it to heal properly.

3. WEAR YOUR COMPRESSION GARMENTS

You must wear your compression garments as directed by Dr. Crofts to reduce swelling, maintain the contour and shape, regulate blood flow, and keep pressure on the area treated for faster, better results.

4. KEEP INCISION AREAS CLEAN

Reduce the risk of infection by following Dr. Crofts directions for caring for your incisions. Remember to keep the area clean and dry. Avoid baths, hot tubs, and pools as soaking in water can reduce the rate of healing and increase your risk of getting an infection.

5. POST SURGERY MASSAGES ARE ESSENTIAL

During the first week or so, you will feel sore, tired, and your body will be inflamed. Additionally, there will be more fluid build up following your liposuction and it’s important to drain this excess fluid. This is where post surgery massages are crucial as they release fluid, prevent fibrosis, decrease lumps and contour irregularities, and lower the risk of infection to create more even, smoother results.

6. MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS, CAFFEINE, AND SMOKING

Last liposuction recovery tip is to avoid caffeine, medications and supplements Dr. Crofts has advised you to stop, as well as smoking. Caffeine and some medications and supplements can slow down or complicate the recovery process. Smoking, along with other forms of nicotine, limit blood flow, prolong the healing process, and increase the risk of infection. It’s important to let Dr. Crofts know about your lifestyle habits, go over any medications and supplements you are taking prior to surgery, and follow his overall post surgical directions to ease the recovery and healing process.
